First ever BlackBerry clamshell phone unmasked, dubbed the 'Kickstart'

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/04/blackberrykickstart.jpg

Ready to have your brain blown out through the top of your head? Look above -- you're staring at the heretofore unseen BlackBerry clamshell, the Kickstart. The Boy Genius snagged a handful of photos of the device (which apparently he's known about for "a while"), and has decided to share his good fortune with the rest of the world. The phone sports a Pearl-esque keyboard, typical trackball navigation, and apparently utilizes both an internal and external LCD screen. No word on specs, carriers, or a release date, but BGR is saying this puppy is due before the end of the year. You'll know more when we know more!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

If you've done anything other than mash F5 (or similar) at Hercules' website the past few seasons, you've likely forgotten all about that sub-$100 Mobile DJ MP3 that surfaced over a year ago. For whatever reason, the thing is just now shipping, but we suppose obnoxiously late is better than never, right? Dubbed the world's "first wireless digital mixing mini-controller," it's available as we speak in black or white hues for $99.99. Release is posted in full after the jump.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Samsung T10 goes floral for spring

It rains every day and the birds won't shut up -- yeah, spring's here, and Samsung's celebrating by dressing up the T10 in this fetching black and purple floral number. Details are scarce, as the "La Fleur Special Edition" of the well-regarded PMP isn't official yet, but we'd expect to see it pop up rather soonish.

New Memory Resistor Circuit Could Make Instant-Boot PCs, Emulate Brain Functions [Gadgets]

T-Mobile to debut 3G as voice-only. No data. We're over it.

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/04/amish-buggy.jpg

Well screw us -- T-Mobile's 3G network debut tomorrow? It's going to be voice only. That's right, you heard us, VOICE ONLY. So trepidatious is this company to actually get their 3G data rollout, um, rolled out, they're launching first with kneecapped voice-only service, keeping only EDGE for those demanding data. Here's the snippet from the memo we received:

"3G is the next generation of our wireless network, following our current GSM network. In this early phase of our network evolution, 3G is a new technology for carrying wireless voice calls and supporting existing data capabilities on our network. In future phases, this next generation network will power 'high-speed' (3G) products and services that connect customers in new and exciting ways. ... Inform customers who are interested in high-speed data that the first phase of our 3G roll out supports voice only."

No word on when T-Mobile actually plans to turn on the faster data, but for everyone who hasn't already jumped ship -- hoping against hope -- the wait continues.

P.S. -Don't believe everything you hear about this kind of thing being status quo. Every single major US 3G network -- including Cingular, Verizon, and Sprint -- went live as either data card-only (with phones added later), or data and voice together.Permalink | Email this | Comments

HP creates radical 'memristor' technology, brains explode

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/04/memristor.jpg

"Memristors" are one of several memory technologies that have been theorized and promised in the coming years. HP has made a real memristor, however, and the way solid state memory is created and stored could have just changed forever. First theorized in 1971, memristors are basic circuits like resistors, capacitors, and inductors. These circuits are able to store data by allowing their levels of electrical resistance to fluctuate between high and low, or 0 and 1 to a computer. Like flash memory, they retain that data without power -- except they do it all on one circuit and at the speed of D-RAM. In the end, we could be looking at a whole new kind of storage, as long as someone can figure out how to get these things onto integrated circuits. Nerds hats off, return to your fanboyism -- now.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Yamaha's notepad / keyboard hybrid concept: a songwriter's dream

Yamaha's got a thing for making dreams into reality, and we must say, we're crossing our fingers and hoping to all that's good and merciful in this world that the above pictured device goes commercial. Little is actually known about the keyboard / notepad hybrid aside from the fact that it was showcased at the Milano Salone trade fair in Italy, and for what it's worth, Yamaha christened the device "key for journey." Look, there's even slots in the leather-bound lid so the keys have room to breathe when it's all closed up. Ah well, a boy can dream, can't he?

i-Bean Head Mounted Video System

http://www.coolest-gadgets.com/wp-content/uploads/ibeanheadmountvideo_small.jpg

Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews.

As far as I can tell, the head mounted video viewers haven’t exactly made a killing in the consumer electronics market yet. The myvu put itself on prominent display at CES Las Vegas this year, and you can read about that on our Sister Site. The Vuzix iWear VR920 was also on display at CES, and it looks somewhat promising.

This next candidate in this growing head mounted video market is the i-Bean. This one is different from the other two aforementioned products because it is not goggles, but an attachment for regular sunglasses or regular glasses. All you have to do is suction cup them onto your usual eyewear.

The i-Bean says that it produces an image that is equivalent to a 21 inch screen from a distance of one meter away. It even has a built in TV tuner, but I’m not sure that it will work when the big HDTV changeover occurs.

As for power, the i-Bean runs on AC power, but you can take it on the road with 3 AA batteries. Apparently, this device is smaller and lighter than most devices of its type, at only 10 grams.

This device certainly costs a whole lot at $385.00, at Mikimoto Beans, a site translated from the Japanese.

iLuv kicks out i168 and i169 HD Radio alarm clocks

Something's really wrong with the world if more than a few months pass by without a new iPod alarm clock from iLuv, so we suppose everyone's a-okay for a few more months now. Announced today, the firm has introduced its first pair of HD Radio clocks, and sure enough, one of 'em plays nice with Cupertino's darling. The i169 would be that player, which offers up a mostly black motif, dual stereo speakers, remote, iPod dock, AM / FM / HD Radio reception, an auxiliary input and dual alarm settings for good measure. As for the currently available i168, it provides most everything you read up there sans the iPod compatibility, but then again, it only demands $89.99. What about the i169, you ask? It'll set you back a cool $169.99 when it lands in "early May." Full release waiting after the break.Permalink | Email this | Comments

MacBook Air users still faced with overheating problems?

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/02/2-6-08-macbook-air.jpg

We're still hearing reports of MacBook Air overheating woe, well after an EFI update in April that was meant to address some of those problems. While hot computers are nothing new, the MacBook Air starts shutting down cores and offloading processes when things get bad, which means users are faced with aggravating stop-start freezing until they can manage to cool the computer off -- or just put it to sleep and let it "rest." Apparently some people have traced this back to the age-old misapplied thermal grease problem, but that's hardly a solace for the average consumer trying to convince Apple to fix this thing for them. We took a MacBook Air that was acting up into the Genius Bar and Apple claimed it couldn't reproduce the problem, though we have heard cases of Apple replacing the computer for users. We'd be curious to know just how many Air users are having trouble, and if the X300 is experiencing anything similar, so let us know in the comments.

Western Digital's VelociRaptor drive gets reviewed

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/04/wd-velociraptor-review.jpg

We already had some early benchmarks of Western Digital's speedy new VelociRaptor hard drive the day it was announced, but the folks at Extreme Tech have now had a bit more time to spend with the drive, and they've churned out a full review of it for those that still haven't made up their mind. As with others, they found the drive more than lived up to its promise of being the "world's fastest SATA disk," with it even beating out many solid state drives in terms of write performance. The biggest downsides, as you might expect, are its relatively high (but not unreasonable) price to gigabyte ratio, and its maximum 300GB capacity, although that's nothing a second (or third) drive can't solve. Of course, they don't stop there, and you can find plenty of charts and comparisons to quench your curiosity by hitting up the link below.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Terry Kenney Wants to Turn Big Truck Traffic into Electricity

http://www.treehugger.com/piezo-trucks-001.jpg

While the Japanese are trying to produce electricity from train station gates (!?), entrepreneur Terry Kenney is going after a bigger target: Trucks. It took him eight years to get a working prototype, but now there's one working at the Port of Oakland which Kenney calls the "Dragon Power Station". Special plates are set on the road, and as big trucks drive over them (about 2,500 of them per day at the port), they compress a tank of hydraulic fluid under the road, which in turn creates a series of pumping actions that turns a generator to produce electricity....

Disney and WowWee team up on cute, killer bots for the ironic uprising

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/04/ultimatewall-e.jpg

Need some irony with your angst-battered diet this morning? Swell, try some of this. Disney and Pixar are set to release their latest animated blockbuster, WALL-E, this summer. The premise of the film finds WALL-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter - Earth-Class) cleaning up the Earth's trash after rampant, unchecked consumerism made the planet uninhabitable. So how do they promote the film? You got it, they launch a new line of plastic WALL-E robots developed in partnership with WowWee and Thinkway Toys which no child could possibly live without. Ultimate WALL-E will list for $190 when launched sometime this summer and feature 10 motors, a remote control, and plenty of sensors to avoid obstacles, respond to touch, and feel the mocking satire of its own existence. The bot will be joined by a $25 iDance WALL-E (think i-Species) and a $40 FlyTech Tinker Bell when they make their May 29th debut in San Mateo at the Maker Faire.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Alienware's Area-51 m17x gaming laptop now on sale

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/04/4-29-07-m17x.jpg

For most, Alienware's AlienNetwork debut was somewhat of a letdown. Nevertheless, at least one good thing did come out of the whole event, and that's the availability of the m17x gaming monster. This 17-inch beast of a laptop finally has its own dedicated page, and yes, you can get your order in starting today. Packed within, you'll find your choice of Intel Core 2 Duo processor, twin GPUs for that sweet SLI action, a WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) display, up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM, oodles of hard drive space, a dual-layer DVD writer (or optional Blu-ray burner), enough ports for you and your cousin and a 12-cell battery that'll likely last an hour on a good day. Sadly, this Crysis destroyer starts at $2,949 (and breaks the $5k mark with ease), and it looks as if units won't start arriving until late May at best.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Microsoft gives cops COFEE: free computer forensic tools

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/04/4-29-08-microsoftsm.jpg

Cops doing computer forensic work already have a ton of tools to choose from, but Microsoft is doing its part to help out as well -- the company just revealed that it's been distributing a special thumb drive to cops in 15 countries to help them identify and extract information from suspects' computers. The drive, called COFEE for Computer Online Forensic Evidence Extractor, is in use by more than 2,000 officers, including some in the States, and Microsoft is giving it away for free, saying that its doing it not for profit but to "help make ensure the Internet stays safe." COFEE contains more than 150 commands that can be used to collect information, decrypt passwords, and poke through network activity, which helps alleviate the problem of having to remove and transport a suspect's computer for evidence purposes -- officers can just plug in the drive. There's no word on when Microsoft will start widely distributing the drives, but we'd assume it'll be soon.

Researchers tout progress in spinning artificial spider silk

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/04/spider-silk-04-29-2008.jpg

We've seen plenty of attempts to mimic spiders in robot-form, but that's not the only bit of inspiration arising from our eight-legged friends, with a number of other researchers also doing their best to artificially replicate the way a spider spins silk. Now, according to the BBC, it seems that a team from the Technical University of Munich has made some significant progress on that front, which could one day lead to a new means of manufacturing strong but lightweight materials. Specifically, the team created a "device" consisting of three channels etched into a piece of glass, which allows for different combinations protein and salts to be mixed together and extruded as a fiber. They are quick to point out, however, that the resulting fiber is not of "particularly high quality," and that while it's a step forward, the whole idea is still "a very big puzzle and there are many pieces missing."Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

McDonald left Elaine’s in the most heroic of ways, after a publication party there for his first book. We asked him about his time with her and what she thought of his tell-all.

It conserves fuel and reduces emissions in city driving by shutting down the engine when the car is stopped (red light, dense traffic, etc), and restarting it instantaneously when the drive takes his or her foot off the brake pedal. You get part of the benefits of a hybrid car at a much lower price tag.So it is not surprising that a new survey shows that 3/4 of UK drivers would buy a car with a stop-start system. Problem is, there are only three carmakers that offer stop-start systems on non-hybrid models, Citroën (we wrote about the

Airis' Kira 740 Eee lookalike gets reviewed

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/04/airis_eee.jpg

French site MobileHub has gotten its hands on another Eee competitor rip-off -- the Airis' Kira 740 (aka, Kira 100) -- and has given it the rundown. The initial impressions are about what you'd expect, besides coming with XP onboard, having 1GB of memory, a VIA C7 1GHz CPU, and a traditional 40GB hard drive, the mini-laptop is almost identical to ASUS' entry. The screen resolution is the same 800 x 480, the keyboard is apparently a shot-for-shot remake, and it features familiar ethernet and WiFi networking options. You can see in the photo above that there are some minor physical differences, though in our opinion they've somehow managed to ugly it up + 30 percent. For €299 (or around $466) you can get yourself a Kira 740 sometime soon. Yay.

Lenovo's IdeaPad U110 available for order, shipping soon

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/04/4-29-08-u110.jpg

Just as expected, Lenovo has updated its webstore with the shiny new IdeaPad U110. The 11.1-inch ultraportable is available for customizing right now in black or red, and both hues start at $1,899. Currently, the red variant touts a 3- to 5-day wait before shipment occurs, while the black model isn't likely to head your way for 2- to 3-weeks. Of course, Lenovo may be padding those figures a touch, but there's your worst-case scenarios, anyway. Israel's Guardium warbots probably not as lame as their promo video

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/04/4-29-08guardyt.jpg

We've seen a couple armed defense bots make the scene now -- the US military even has a couple deployed in Iraq -- but the promo video for the $600,000 Guardium bots recently commissioned by Israel isn't exactly a fearsome demonstration of next-gen force. Not only do the rendered old-school CRT displays offer warnings like INTRUDER NONCOMPLIANT, all the bot seems to be able to do is sneeze out of a cloud of white smoke. Terrifying. Maybe these things play better at defense contractor conventions, but something tells us that an actual angry dog might be a little more effective. Check the whole video below.

Solar Powered Cordless Fan uses the sun to keep you cool

http://www.coolest-gadgets.com/wp-content/uploads/solar-fan.jpg

Source: UberGizmo
Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews.

Until this past weekend came, the area where I live was experiencing near summer-like temperatures outside. I was even forced for a couple of days to kick on the old A/C for a little bit. Most of the time I made do with just some fans around the house, which got me thinking about how much power I must be using running those fans all the time. If I had one of these Solar Powered Cordless Fans, I wouldn’t need to wonder.

As you might imagine, this fan draws all of the power it needs from the suns rays. Personally, I think it’s pretty cool that it gets power from the very thing it is working against. A full charge will net you around 8 hours of life, which isn’t too bad. If you find you’re out of juice and still need some air circulated, you can always just plug it into the wall. Of course all of this energy-saving comes at a price. Around $60 to be exact. It’s more than you’d pay for a similar non-solar fan, but just think of the electricity you’ll be saving.

PS2 to PS3 converter bridges the Rock Band / Guitar Hero divide

It doesn't look like Activision and Harmonix are ever going to make nice and implement broad hardware compatibility for Rock Band and Guitar Hero controllers, but if you've got a sizable investment in PS2 gear, The Ant Commandos' new converter might let you ignore all the nastiness and keep rockin' anyway. TAC's Universal PS2-to-PS3 Converter is compatible with PS3 Rock Band and PS2 / PS3 GHIII, and it works with basically every PS2 axe you can think of, wired and wireless. LG Secret, a mobile with Wii like control

http://www.coolest-gadgets.com/wp-content/uploads/secret-secreen.jpg

Pressy idea: Educational Toys

Last week LG announced the latest phone in their Black Label range, the LG Secret. I was fortunate to be invited to the bloggers press event to hear about the phone and get my hands on one to take home.

There were 2 features of the Secret that really stood out to me, it’s hard, it’s incorporates carbon fiber and tempered glass to protect it from the elements. You can actually smack the screen with your keys without it breaking or even scratching.

Like the Apple iPhone it has a built-in motion detector so the screen automatically rotates depending on orientation and it has a fun element by being used in some of the supplied games. The phone acts a bit like a Wii controller, where you have to flick it to smack a base ball or tilt to navigate a maze. The games are very simple (both graphically and playability wise) but it’s hopefully a sign of exciting things to come.

New iMacs running an overclocked Penryn chip, not Montevina

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/01/intel-penryn-with-penny.jpg

Following this morning's iMac introduction, speculation has been rampant as to whether Apple got an early shot at Intel's upcoming Core 2 Duo Extreme X9100 chip. The X9100 is meant to usher in the "Montevina" Centrino 2 era, and boasts significant less power consumption than its forebears, in addtion to those spiffy new clock speeds. Well, it turns out the new iMacs aren't Montevina, but instead a special-made 45nm Penryn 3.06GHz chip with a 1066MHz frontside bus. That means most of the juice of the X9100, but at 55 watts instead of 44. This chip exclusivity has been a bit of a pattern with Apple, and one which we're sure its competitors are quite appreciative of.

The music industry has evolved into a Xerox machine, of sorts. A copy upon a copy upon yet more copies. We’re waiting for the point where the major music labels throw up their hands in confusion and admit to their defeat. Because you know that’s what is happening. The music companies have already lost as an industry. It’s just a matter of discovering a way to cut their losses and work out a deal with the people behind the copies.

If we we’re heavily invested in the music industry, we’d be turning to companies that make products such as this Virtual Console USB Duplicator. Capable of duplicating 60 1GB USB cards in under two minutes, the Virtual Console is the music industry’s worst nightmare. This easily allows the average home music pirate to create a 1GB music sampling for 60 of their closest friends. Take into account that their friends could very well be making copies themselves, and musicians have a real problem on their hands.

TomTom profits drop 83% due to price cuts

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/04/4-28-2008-tomtom.jpg

The war for the low end of the GPS market promises to be a bloody one, and it looks like TomTom's suffered the first major injury: quarterly profits at the device maker dropped 83 percent from last year, and the company says it's due to competitive price cuts. TomTom made a net profit of just €7.3M ($11.4M) this quarter compared to €44M ($66.2M) in the year-ago quarter, results which led the company to lower its outlook for the entire year. The company actually sold 50 percent more devices than it did a year ago, but as PND prices steadily fall, it looks like TomTom will have to figure out a new way to pad those margins and refill its piggy bank if that $4.2B all-cash Tele Atlas deal goes through.

Seiko Slimstick

http://www.coolest-gadgets.com/wp-content/uploads/slimstick.jpg

Pressy idea: Educational Toys

Recently, I have become fixated with devices that help you lose weight. Last week, it was the Tanita BC558. This week, the Seiko Slimstick, a more portable weight-loss device.

The Seiko Slimstick is a more advanced version of those old-school pedometers that can count your steps. Just between you and me, I always thought those step-counters were kind of useless. Their accuracy was highly questionable, as they would register a step if they were shaken. Not only that, what good is it to discover how many steps you’ve taken in a day? I suppose you could convert that to miles, but most exercise programs are based on burning calories, not miles.

The Slimstick is a more accurate pedometer that uses dual-axis accelerometers to track the magnitude of a user’s movements. It is easy-to-use as it clips to the user’s clothing, and is the size of a pack of gum. While on the user’s person, it can then count calories burned during the day, the amount of time a user was active, and, of course, the number of steps that were taken during the day.

The Seiko Slimstick is only available in Japan, for a price that is equivalent to $60-70 US Dollars. It can be purchased in silver, pink, or gold metal finishes. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a plan for an overseas campaign.

I still can’t believe my eyes after reading this news article over and over again, which is why I want to share this tech-related story with you guys. It is more of a science than anything else, featuring a penguin in a wetsuit. First of all, why would a penguin be wearing a wetsuit in the first place? Apparently, this is no laughing matter as biologists at the California Academy of Sciences had developed a wetsuit created for an African penguin in order to assist him get back in the swim of things. The penguin’s name is Pierre, ageing along pretty well at 25 years of age and is losing plenty of hair, rendering him the social embarrassment of an exposed, pale pink derierre.

While marine mammals boast a layer of blubber to help them keep warm, penguins lack this vital biological “ingredient” so to speak, relying instead on their waterproof feathers to keep them warm and toasty under blizzard conditions. Needless to say, without these feathers Pierre wouldn’t jump into the academy’s penguin tank as he surely doesn’t want to end up shivering on the sidelines while his peers have a field time moving about in the water. Staff at Oceanic Worldwide, a supplier of dive gear based in San Leandro, were approached to develop an actual penguin suit for Pierre, and managed to come up with a successful working model. Pierre’s wetsuit uses Velcro to fasten itself, covering Pierre’s torso while providing ample openings for his flippers. Pierre has managed to gain weight, grow feathers on his hind parts and regained his swagger and confidence after six weeks of wearing the wetsuit.

I guess Pierre will be weaned off the wetsuit very soon, as he learns to integrate himself with the rest of his community. This is truly a case where necessity is the mother of all invention.

Cell phone payment: Is it here to stay?

http://www.coolest-gadgets.com/wp-content/uploads/vcc.jpg

Pressy idea: Educational Toys

I know that Japan has been using cell phones as a mode of payment for quite a fair number of years already, but that country is pretty much isolated when it comes to advanced stuff like that. How would you feel about using your cell phone to make that odd payment for your shopping or meal? While it might be much safer compared to carrying a wad of cash, what happens when you lose your cell phone (either by accident or through a theft)? Not only will you despair knowing that your contact list has been lost (serves you right for not having a backup), in addition to precious photos of your family taken by the handset’s digital camera and most importantly - your wallet. To suffer from so many blows at once isn’t exactly kind on a person, which is why I prefer to let the cell phone continue doing what it does best - communication. Let the good old fashioned wallet do the rest of the purchasing work. How do you see this?

I previously admired this horizontal eco dishwasher concept by Marie-Christine Lacasse & Marie Claude Savard, seen at the University of Quebec in Montreal Design Grad Show, but only had the video. I am particularly fascinated by it because I used to try and get clients to install two dishwashers, which would act as storage as the dishes just went from one to another. This would save cupboard space, the work emptying the dishwasher and energy, as you don't run it until all of the dishes are moved from one to the other and it is full. The upcoming Lenovo IdeaPad U110 Ultraportable is a 11 inch wonder that will fit in any purse or bag for that matter. Not that I fancy small display notebooks since I’m still so in love with my Dell 1520 notebook. The Lenovo IdeaPad U110 Ultraportable is the smaller amongst its bigger versions - the 17-inch Y710, and the 15.4-inch Y510.

I’ve found out that IdeaPads have textured lid finishes (unglossiness ?), sleek “frameless” screens, media contro keys on the top side of the keyboard and a bright orange button, called the Shuttle Key, which can be used on its own to control volume or other functions (sort of a Fn key). Also included will be a Shuttle Center media software, Dolby Home Theater sound, built-in 1.3-megapixel webcam, face off biometric security and quick system recovery in case viruses strike.

Platt’s Deadliest Catch

In this week's issue, Adam Platt travels to Japan to see if he can eat the world's most dangerous meal. He also reviews Commerce, so he must have lived. Rob and Robin tell the story of a biryani so good that it inspired a tiny new restaurant, Sangam, on Bleecker Street. Not far away are Royal Cafe + Pastry, a new café, and Le Petite Belge, a Belgian waffles kiosk, news of which comes courtesy of the Robs. To round things out, Patti Jackson of Centovini shares her recipe for miner's-lettuce salad with pheasant eggs, and Gael Greene reviews the new Italian steakhouse Padre Figlio.

Nameless Kosher Restaurant Chooses Contest Winner

http://nymag.com/daily/food/28_koshervillage_lg.jpg

When the restaurant that was formerly Chickpea turned glatt kosher and announced over a month ago that it would rename itself via a contest offering $3,000, we expected the winning name would be, well, catchy, even if not quite as colorful as Hummuscidal or Your Mother Eats Falafel Balls — just two of the hundreds of entries. (Then there was the suggestion of a Grub Street commenter: Shawarmonger.) But the winner is … Kosher Village? They paid $3,000 for this? They should've just invested that cash in a viral-marketing campaign! Oh, wait…

Crikey! World’s Largest Wildlife Hospital is Made of Strawbale

When the Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, died a couple of years back, after being stung by a stingray, our obituary post sparked off a torrent of views for and against Steve’s style of wildlife conservation. Let’s see how we fare this time?Wildlife Warriors Worldwide, the organisation set up by Steve Irwin and his family, is currently building what is described as the “world's largest wildlife hospital” next door to Australia Zoo in Queensland. Which is kinda cool on its own. But we also like that it will be housed in “one of the biggest strawbale constructions in the world.”...

FC Mobile Portable Gaming System Plays NES Cartridges

Got a stack of NES carts at home that you’ve been dying to play while traveling? I didn’t think so. Given the capabilities of the PSP and even the DS, I’m kind of surprised anyone would even want a portable way to play old NES carts when they can be so easily emulated. But the FC Mobile portable system does just that. It looks like a slightly fat, overly curvaceous version of the Game Boy Micro, but that’s mostly because of the slot on the back designed to accommodate NES cartridges.

You can either play the games using the FC Mobile’s 2.4 inch LCD color screen, or use the included AV adapter cable to hook it up to a television and enjoy all that 8-bit goodness on your hi-def display. It’s powered by 3 AA batteries, comes in a red & white or silver & black color schemes and appears to only play North American NES games.

Unfortunately the only place to pick one up right now is on eBay, where they range in price from around $30 to $60.

The Whatchamacallit, Post Recession Phase Transition

http://www.readwriteweb.com/images/recession_hotdogs.jpg

This could be a long and deep recessionThe phase transition trilogyThe Web 2.0 problem is not on the cost side, it is on the revenue side4 problems with get big first, monetize laterThe standard revenue models are hard to apply once a service has got a lot of traction. There is push-back from people who have grown used to the service without ads. Advertising that is not useful, that is simply an interruption, will alienate users. Yes, we have spoiled users with a “free and no ads” value proposition.Innovative services may need an innovative revenue model, so that the advertising is useful and is not viewed as simply an irritation. But innovating on both fronts is hard. The big budgets are allocated conservatively based on proven models, standard ratios and lots of competing sites to choose from. Cost Per Click and search was a “made in heaven” combination, since the advertising could actually be useful to searchers and advertisers were incentivized to make their ads useful. Since then what ad model innovation has moved beyond experimental to deliver $100m plus revenue lines? Online advertising is still fundamentally either CPM or CPC, with a bit of unfashionable but possibly highly effective Affiliate Marketing.Subscriptions are tougher to sell to consumers in a recession (even if we want to sell subscriptions even more in a recession). This is even harder when your competitors, who have drunk deep of the “don’t worry about monetization Kool Aid”, are giving the same thing away. Hard, but very rewarding for those that succeed. When the give-it-away crowd run out of money, the subscription business may return to favor. However to sell subscriptions you need one of two propositions. Either you can say “our monthly subscription saves you money” (e.g. Sales Force vs Siebel) but that is usually a business proposition, less often relevant for consumer services. Or you can make your service addictively fun in a market without a free alternative, which fits some game/entertainment models. The supply and demand problem. Yes we are spending more time online. So ad $$$ will flow from traditional media to online media. The gap between time spent online (20%) versus ad $$$ spent online (5%) is still “big enough to drive a truck through”. But the supply of content, created by users or programs at virtually no cost, is increasing way, way faster than online attention time. So the total ad $$$ is continuing to increase, but it is being spread a lot thinner. Particularly when you subtract Google’s revenue from the total. We bet everything on selling to consumers who were betting everything on treating their house like an ATM on the basis that property prices would rise forever. Oops.We never invented a model that effectively translated social media activity into revenue. Without that it was just an expensive playground. Double oops.

Asus rumored to be spinning off Eee brand, 11-inch Eee PC coming too

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/04/news03042008-1.jpg

Information doesn't get much more twisted that this so you'd best tread lightly with it. We've got a DigiTimes rumor whose message was modified in translation. Engadget Chinese tells us that the original DigiTimes article (in Chinese) states that Asus is planning an Eee PC "sub-corporation." In other words, an ASUS spin-off that would include more than just low-cost ultra-portables. The rumor is attributed to DigiTimes' proven ASUS sources. However, DigiTimes' own English translation simply calls the move an Eee "sub-brand" which was already obvious with ASUS' announced plans for additional Eee branded products including the E-DT desktop, E-TV television, and 19- to 21-inch E-Monitor all-in-one said to be due in Q3. DigiTimes' sources also claim that ASUS will slap a 1001 model number on its 10.6-inch Eee PC and then -- perhaps supporting the spin-off claim -- says that there will be an 11-inch Eee PC before the end of the year as well. Originally, Jerry Shen, ASUS CEO, said the Eee PC would never exceed 10-inches so that it wouldn't cut into ASUS' laptop offerings. A spinoff would presumably give the Eee brand more freedom to compete.

I’m really enjoying this trend of lightweight, easy-to-fly RC planes and helicopters. Not only can they be enjoyed indoors where you don’t have to deal with the wind, but they can easily survive those inevitable crashes that happen every few minutes. The latest addition to the fleet is this RC ‘Jump Jet’ which can take off and land vertically like a helicopter, but also fly around the room like a plane. Think of it as a slightly cheaper, quieter and easier to fly version of the Harrier Jump Jet.

Like with most of the indoor RC aircraft available today, the Jump Jet itself uses a small rechargeable battery to keep it as light as possible, while the remote itself runs off 3 AAA batteries. I’ve included a video of the craft taking off and flying after the jump, and to be perfectly honest it really just looks like a 4-bladed helicopter that’s been adorned with small wings and a tail to make it look like a plane. There’s no control surfaces that I can see, and this thing would have to be moving pretty quickly through the air to generate any kind of lift with those wings. However, that doesn’t make it look any less fun.

You can find it at Drinkstuff.com for about $140.

As of tonight NVIDIA's got one more notch to add to that bed post: the GeForce 9600 GSO, which is a little more on the cheap date end of the spectrum. The first of the card-makers to launch their 9600 GSO is EVGA, with a 650MHz, 384MB / 1900MHz DDR3, PCI Express 2.0 ditty (e-GeForce 9600GSO Superclocked 384MB), as well as an even lower end 550MHz, 384MB / 1600MHz version (e-GeForce 9600GSO 384MB). And yeah, it does DirectX 10 -- not that you should even need to ask.

Planex DigiJuke NAS snags YouTube and BitTorrent video then jams it down the Wii, Xbox 360, iPod... and throat of MPAA

Here it is copyright bandits, the single biggest reason (other than silicone) to make a Hollywood studio notice of you: the MZK-NAS02SG1T network attached server from Planex. The main selling point behind the the ¥54,799 (about $524) 1TB Gigabit Ethernet block is the claim to "universal access" for all your devices. That little trick comes courtesy of its DigiJuke browser for searching and tagging the BitTorrent and YouTube content you want downloaded in the appropriate PSP and iPod (MPEG-4), Wii (FLV), or TV (MPEG-2) format for in-home or on-the-go viewing. The NAS also streams audio and video to your iTunes laptops or desktops or DLNA TV, Xbox 360, or other compliant device in the home. A front-facing USB 2.0 jack offers one-touch dubbing of USB sticks while a second around back offers ready storage expansion. It ships with a pair of 3.5-inch 500GB drive which you can swap out for higher capacity spinners at a later date. That is if the studios don't shut you down first.

Rumors swirl of Sanyo selloff to Matsushita / Panasonic

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/04/panasonic-sanyo-merger.jpg

Details are fuzzy right now -- and what details there are have been officially denied -- but the Japanese press is having a bit of a field day over the possibility of a Sanyo selloff to Matsushita / Panasonic. Apparently Goldman Sachs, Sumitomo, and Daiwa own some 67% of Sanyo's equity, and as Japanese paper Yomiuri reports, are looking at the possibility of transferring said equity to or otherwise forming a partnership with Matsushita. Again, both Matsu and Sanyo are denying the report as of now, so it's all still up in the air as the salarymen figure out whether to combine both companies to make a corporate entity larger than even Hitachi (which currently sits at the top of Japan's heap).

Fresh breath is something you should have whenever you’re around another person. I don’t really care how your breath smells when you’re sitting at home by yourself, but the minute someone smells that foul odor coming out of your mouth, you can bet they’ll put as much distance between the two of you as possible. Usually if you brush your teeth and use some mouthwash at the appropriate times, you’re good to go, however, there are some times where you want to be extra sure. That’s when you’ll turn to the Kiss Me.

The Kiss Me Personal Bad Breath Detector is simple, just breath on it, and LEDs will light up to indicate just rank your breath is. Then you’ll know to slip off for a quick brush of the teeth, or if you’re out and about, at least pick up some mints or gum. I’m usually pretty confident in the freshness of the air coming out of my mouth, plus I really don’t need anything extra to carry around. However, if you spend most of your days with very important persons (and perhaps eat lots of onions) then you might want to consider spending the $19 on one.

RIM developing "Apple Killer" touchscreen BlackBerry?

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/04/bb-9000-small.jpg

The times has a verbose 2,000 word piece about the high stakes world of high-end cellphone manufacturers (no way!), specifically centered around RIM's post-iPhone trials and tribulations. Besides a bit of vague lip service paid to the 9000 series, they're claiming that two 3rd party developers -- no sources cited -- leaked that RIM has a skunkworks product dubbed "AK" (which stands for "Apple Killer"), and that apparently it'll be touchscreen. And then comes the tub-thumping money shot from co-CEO Mike Lazaridis: "I couldn't type on and I still can't type on it, and a lot of my friends can't type on it. It's hard to type on a piece of glass." Right, until you guys decide to do one of your own -- these executive types are so transparent they might as well just be up front.

Two years during which even the mainstream experienced intense sensitization to green issues. Will this newly informed public still be enthralled by the excitement of seeing green technology pushed to its limits, or will the question be: "is that the flatten-the-rainforest biodiesel or the take-food-from...

Google Docs Lives to Share the Words

Mike Riversdale wrote the best article I've read about Google Docs. "Google Docs ... so what - the ONE reason why you should care" doesn't talk only about Google Docs, it's also about Zoho, wikis or any other tool that lets you write, collaborate and share your documents. It outlines the major difference between Google Docs and office suites like Microsoft Office or OpenOffice: Google Docs is built for a connected environment.
Documents (PC-based I'm thinking) are fundamentally about "one person". The document you edit looks lovingly into your eyes proclaiming ever lasting love just for you. If someone else tries to muscle in on this close(d) relationship they will get told to go away, I am with someone else.

Of course the words inside the document want to be loved by all and to love all. They force the document to dump one person and love another in a serial monogamy type of way. The document that was only for you will quite easily tell you to go away as they are now in a one-on-one relationship with someone else...

This issue - words love all / documents love one at a time - is a fundamental issue that many have tried to solve using any number of clever means. We've had software attempting to mediate the differences - every electronic document management (EDMS) system you've battled against lives this category. We've had consultants claiming to solve it via changes in work practices - 'workflow" and the bottlenecks they employ.

The most common way employed by everyone ever is ... copy the document. The words love this - they can love more and more people, more words can join them as they spread around the network - you can put in your words, I can add my words, Stevens from Accounts can remove the words he doesn't want - the words are out there, they love to be free and are loving all.

But once set free they're bloody near impossible to reign back in, for a start where the frig are they - out there in the wilds of the electronic world running free is all well and good until some poor sod has to try and reign them in. (...)

Google Docs doesn't live in the 'document' world. Oh it has similar naming conventions, it uses all the jargon that we're used to and it pretends to be a document ... but it's not because it comes from the 'words' world view. It knows that the words you're gonna edit are, 99.9% of the time, going to want to be loved by many more than you. And being on the Web they know that the world of connected people at your fingertips is massive. Not only is there the list of attractive people in your contacts list but there is everyone with an internet connection!

Google Docs lives to share the words:

* knows that words want to be shared and that's why you've typed them.
* its world view knows/understands its connected environment
* its capabilities are built to use this environment

Apple looking to Immersion for haptic technology on iPhone?

http://www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2008/04/4-26-08-clent-richardson.jpg

Immersion, the same folks responsible for adding haptic technology (force feedback from touch panels, pretty much) in a fleet of Nokia handsets, could be looking to do the same with Cupertino's one and only. While VibeTonz isn't specifically mentioned by name, a recent report (which should certainly be filed as a rumor for the time being) is suggesting that bigwigs from both outfits are in ongoing meetings "over licensing and implementation issues of iPhone haptics." Interestingly enough, this news is flowing hot on the heels of Immersion appointing Clent Richardson as president and CEO; if that name rings a bell, he previously spent five years pretty high up the ladder at Apple. Of course, all the signs pointing to yes doesn't mean anything in and of itself, so we'll just twiddle our thumbs a bit longer and hope to have some feedback for 'em soon enough.

Joystiq goes all out with Mario Kart Wii controller comparison

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/04/mario-kart-wii-showdown.jpg

As we're all too well aware, Mario Kart can be serious business for some folks, and Mario Kart Wii will certainly be no exception, which makes the right choice of controller all the more important. Thankfully, our pals at Joystiq have now come through with a meticulous comparison of all five driving options at your disposal. That includes the Wiimote on its own, the Wiimote with Wii Wheel, the Wiimote / nunchuk combo, the Classic Controller, and the tried and true GameCube controller. Somewhat surprisingly, while the GameCube Controller and Classic Controller each helped to put in some solid times, Joystiq actually found the WIimote / nunchuck combo to the best all around option, with it faring particularly well when using a bike. Lagging far behind, however, was the solo Wiimote (which they recommend to avoid at all costs), although the addition of the Wii Wheel did apparently did help to make things a bit more manageable. Hit up the link below for the full rundown.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

NVIDIA pushing up GeForce 9900 to outgun Radeon HD 4800?

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/04/4-25-08-9900.jpg

NVIDIA's been on a hyper-competitive tear lately, and while the latest rumor isn't quite on par with Roy Taylor saying that the Intel CPU is "dead," it reinforces the company's new win-at-all-costs attitude. Seems ATI's upcoming RV770-based Radeon HD 4800 might threaten NVIDIA's dominance of the high-end graphics market, and that's just not acceptable -- so the company is planning on pushing up the release of the GeForce 9900 to July. That's one billion transistors and GDDR3 memory, if you haven't been memorizing rumored graphic card specs -- we're guessing that blue screen of death will render mighty fast on that rig.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

By Andrew Liszewski

While walking home last night I happened to notice this bizarre truck stopped at a red light. It was your standard cube van, except for the fact that the cube portion featured windows on all sides. And while it’s kind of hard to tell in this photo, inside the truck was someone dressed like an alien on vacation. The rest of the aliens were actually similarly dressed mannequins, but I guess they felt they needed at least one actual person to make it more realistic.

I can’t deny the fact that the truck served its purpose of grabbing people’s attention (I did stop and take a photo after all) but it was really a lame advertising stunt. And I can’t help but feel that other people might decide to arbitrarily boycott this company like I have, because of it. (It doesn’t take much.) If you work in advertising and are reading this post here’s my suggestion on how to improve this idea. You should replace the aliens with a machine that shoots out money, and instead of driving around the city you should just park in front of my apartment building. Then I’ll buy whatever you’re selling.

Archos TV+ TVportation plug-in shifts your TV to 605 / 705 PMP

http://www.engadgethd.com/media/2008/04/4-25-08-tvportation.jpg

Got yourself an Archos TV+? How's about a WiFi-enabled 605 / 705 PMP? Even if you're sadly answering "no" to the latter question, folks with a Windows or Windows Mobile-based machine can still get in on the placeshifting action, as Archos has just announced a swank new TV+ plug-in that brings Slingbox capabilities to those devices. The May-bound TVportation application, which will be available gratis for those who register their Archos TV+ on the firm's website (it's $49.99 otherwise), simply enables users to control their set-top-box from anywhere where WiFi is accessible, giving users the ability to watch live TV on their handheld. Sure, it's more of the same, but for the Archos faithful who refuse to trade in their 605 / 705, it's a dream come true. Check out a lengthy demonstration vid after the break.

NVIDIA VP joins the smack-talk fun, says the Intel CPU is "dead"

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/04/4-25-08-roy-taylor.jpg

Alright, we're loving this new hyper-aggressive, sorta-nasty version of NVIDIA. Not only has CEO Jen Hsun-Huang promised to "open a can of whoop-ass" on Intel, the company has been touting its new sub-$45 integrated platform as far superior to Celeron-based systems, and now we've got VP of Content Relations Roy Taylor sending out emails saying that "a war has started" and pronouncing the Intel CPU "dead." Roy says Intel is "panicking" because CPUs have "run out of steam," and that they "no longer make anything run faster." According to Roy -- whose nickname is "Big Pipe," no joke -- the only thing that needs to get faster is the GPU, and NVIDIA's going to make it happen. That's some brash talk, all around -- let's hope NVIDIA's ready when Intel brings Nehalem out to play. Check out the whole email at the read link.

Midtown Machers Get Their Own Entrance to Brasserie 44

http://nymag.com/images/2/daily/food/08/04/28_notanentrance_lgl.jpg

When you’re a high-powered Manhattan macher, you can’t be bothered to walk around the block: You need backdoor shortcuts along the lines of Henry Hill’s Copacabana entrance in Goodfellas. That seems to be the feeling of management at Brasserie 44, at the Royalton, whose 44th Street entrance is inconveniently a block away from their biggest customers in the media and fashion business. Owner John McDonald explains, “We have such a large client base in the media and fashion biz (conde nast, hearst, nytimes, grace building i.e. Michael Kors, Tahari, and more) that as a special VIP service they no longer have to do the long walk around the block and back through the lobby. We have stationed a door person who is at the back door from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. who greets and allows you direct access to 44.” So pay no attention to that plaque next to the door. Just say you’re here for lunch and Johnny Mack sent you.

Choux Beignets And Apricot Curd

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_of9NPGo1g1M/SBIk05t0zkI/AAAAAAAADM0/3HR3yOoSycE/s400/Donuts2.jpg

I don't really like to start a post with a conversation but after trying different ways to write it up, I found that the accurate was to relate the conversation that took place between B. and myself last night before falling asleep. If you were to eavesdrop on the following conversation you'd think we lead the grand life:
B: what time is the cocktail party tomorrow?
Me: starts at 7pm. What time is the band playing?
Him: starts at 9pm.

If you know us a little better, then the rest of the conversation about our friends' party for their anniversary makes much more sense:
Me: I need to have the 300 cream puffs done by 10am at the latest, they are picking them up and the cake by noon.
Him: I've got to be at the party site by 6pm to hook up the PA system and practice some tunes with the guys. Well, at least we can have breakfast together. Anything special (with that look of "please, no more clafoutis")?
Me: what about some "choux beignets" with some of the leftover cream puff dough I am bound to have?
Him: I'll fry!
Me: deal! (meaning I can shower, cook down some rhubarb and write a post all at once, the usual!)

What a breakfast! We were perched on our chairs like little kids enjoying their latest pranks! It has been a while since we had any sort of fried dough for breakfast, keeping it relatively healthy during the week while buttering some brioche on Sundays. I don' eat a lot for breakfast but I love baking breakfast items. The choux are what we call "Pets de Nonne" (Nuns' Farts) which always made me giggle as a kid, not so much as an adult about to eat them for breakfast. I paired the choux beignets with an apricot curd I had made the day before just because I was tired of starring at a lonely bottle of apricot nectar in the pantry. Worked perfectly for dunking! The choux are really fun to watch when you fry them as they puff like crazy and wobble in the oil and shrivel like little old ladies when you let them sit for a while. Bonus, these are a breeze to make: mix, scoop and fry...and eat!

I am sorry if I have to leave you on this short post but I have got to finish some stuff for the party favors and there is a wild baking weekend coming up. I want to get some stuff done ( not to mention cleaning up a bit and organizing) before Marce from Pip In The City comes on Tuesday. She is staying for 5 days and beside her request to have me teach her macarons, I plan on the two of us having a fun time on the town! I have got the camera ready!!

Choux Beignets and Apricot Curd:

For the choux:
85 gr all purpose flour
75ml water
75 ml milk
65 gr butter
3 eggs
1 Tb sugar
1/8 tsp salt
canola oil for frying

Sift the flour and set aside. Heat the water, milk, butter and salt to a full rolling boil, so that the fat is not just floating on the top but is dispersed throughout the liquid. Stir the flour into the liquid with a heavy wooden spoon, adding it as fast as it can be absorbed. Avoid adding it all at once or it will form clumps. Cook, stirring constantly and breaking up the lumps if necessary, by pressing them against the side of the pan with the back of the spoon until the mixture comes away from the sides of the pan, about 2-3 minutes. Transfer the dough to a mixer bowl. Let the paste cool slightly so that the eggs will not cook when they are added. You can add and stir the eggs by hand but it requires some elbow grease. Mix in the eggs, one at a time, using the paddle attachment on low or medium speed. The dough should have the consistency of thick mayonnaise.
Heat the oil to 360F in a medium pan (I use a 8 inch cast iron) and scoop small rounds of dough that you drop into the oil. Fry until golden brown on each side. Drain on paper towel, serve with the apricot curd if desired.

For the Apricot Curd:
1 cup apricot nectar
1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp lime zest

Combine the zest, sugar, nectar in a saucepan, and bring to a simmer. In a small bowl, beat the eggs until light. Beat some of the apricot mixture into the eggs to temper. Scrape the mixture back into the saucepan and cook stirring constantly until it thickens up, about 5 minutes. Let cool to room temp and use to fill the cake.Strain and refrigerate, covered with plastic wrap until ready to use.

MIRA 'Plugless' Plug-In Hybrid Car Has Removable Battery Packs

http://www.treehugger.com/mira-h4v-01.jpg

The Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA), a British automotive design, development and certification consultancy, has done what many TreeHugger readers have been suggesting in the comments of many posts about plug-in hybrid cars: Removable battery packs that can be swapped.Their test vehicle is a modified Skoda Fabia which they call the H4V (Hybrid 4 wheel drive Vehicle) because the gasoline engine powers the front wheels while two 35kW electric motors power the rear wheels. The regular gasoline version of the car gets 32 mpg (7.24 L/100km) while their 'plugless' plug-in hybrid prototype returned 53 mpg (4.4 L/100km)....

Remember the scene in INDEPENDENCE DAY when Jeff Goldblum places a satellite like dish on the roof of his dad’s car and triangulates the signal of his wife’s cellphone to determine where she was in the White House? His dad asks him how he can do that and he replies “all cable repair men know how to do this, pop.” Well, the Hi-Gain USB Wireless-300N Dish Adapter from Hawking Technologies won’t triangulate a signal in the White House, but it will boost weak WiFi signals in areas where a signal isn’t very strong to begin with.

With a supports range of nearly 4,000 feet, this 802.11n capable antenna can extend a wireless network up to six times its range and claims a data throughput 12 times the average for transfer speeds in excess of 300Mbps. IN addition, the 300-N is purely plug and play by USB and is portable. Simply plug the 300N into your laptop, install the included software, and direct the HWDN1 towards a wireless source. The result will be blazing speeds when the only open chair at Starbucks is wrapped around rebar yielding a paltry 1 bar signal.

Just don’t tell those invading aliens we can do that. Otherwise they’ll use our wi-fi signal to cripple our defenses.

Musical magic in GarageBand

Jim Dalrymple (macworld.com), still going strong on his recording project, knew he wanted to write “a traditional type blues songâ€"nothing too complicated, just a good slow blues number in A.” But even though he knew what he wanted, laying down some tracks proved harder than he thought. Until, that is, Dalrymple remembered Magic GarageBand. Just 45 seconds later, he “had the perfect slow blues song playing, while I filled in the leads.”

Q&A with Khoi Vinh at the New York Times “We draw inspiration from what’s happening in digital media at large, regardless of whether or not a news organization is explicitly involved, and often regardless of whether a given digital product deals in the news at all. That means that sites of miscellaneous classification like YouTube, Wikipedia, Craigslist and Facebook â€" and countless others, many of which might have only recently emerged from their founders’ garages â€" are of as much interest to us as top-shelf competitors like The Guardian and our other peers.” Do you focus on bad luck? “Remember that whatever you pay attention to grows in your mind. If you focus on what’s going wrong in your lifeâ€"especially if you see it as ‘bad luck’ you can do nothing aboutâ€"it will seem blacker and more malevolent. In a short time, you’ll become so convinced that everything is against you that you’ll notice more and more instances where this appears to be true. As a result, you will almost certainly stop trying, convinced that nothing you can do will improve your prospects.” You weren't meant to have a boss “Another thing you notice when you see animals in the wild is that each species thrives in groups of a certain size. A herd of impalas might have 100 adults; baboons maybe 20; lions rarely 10. Humans also seem designed to work in groups, and what I’ve read about hunter-gatherers accords with research on organizations and my own experience to suggest roughly what the ideal size is: groups of 8 work well; by 20 they’re getting hard to manage; and a group of 50 is really unwieldy.” Is Apple creating some kind of a virtual world environment? “ would clearly indicate that there’s a store front involved here in order for a user to know that it’s a sunny day in the fall in this virtual world. Something a little outside of the box I’d say and definitely far beyond anything known by any of us shopping at the Apple Store today.” Making long-distance work partnerships succeed “Technology makes it possible to run a business from practically anywhere on the planet. But what if your business partner lives in a different city or a different time zone? How do long-distance partners make it work? The answer appears to be with lots of planning and smart use of technology. And even in the best long-distance arrangements, an old-fashioned in-person meeting now and then seems to reignite the spark.” Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch “Emmy-nominated series Deadliest Catch returns for a third season of daring adventures on the high seas. Viewers once again voyage to the Bering Sea and follow the brave captains and crew of eight crab-fishing vessels as they struggle against the treacherous weather conditions doing one of the deadliest â€" and most lucrative â€" jobs in the world.” Timeframe date picker “Click-draggable. Range-makeable. A better calendar…I’m just sick of multiple date pickers on the same page.” Scott Raymond nails the recent Twitter flap in the blogosphere “Twitter must be really grateful for the goldmine of free technical and business advice they’ve gotten in the last 24 hours.”

It has been a while since we have reported on Tanita’s products. Tanita probably makes the best weighing scales in the world, but one of their products, the BC558 is more of a “Segmental Body Composition Monitor” than a scale.

So what exactly is a Segmental Body Composition Monitor? It is a way of taking individual measurements for each body segment, including the trunk, right arm, left arm, right leg, and left leg.

So what exactly is the Tanita BC558 measuring? Everything. This includes your body fat percentage, body water percentage, muscle mass, bone mass, visceral fat, metabolic age, as well as weight. All of this information can be used to set up an exercise plan for yourself, and the Tanita BC558 can graph your weight loss progress on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.

The set up of the Tantia BC558 is somewhat difficult, and involves setting up the date, time, and other personal weight settings. This setup process use retractable handgrip electrodes that allow for more accurate readings of the measurements that I mentioned above.

So if you are looking for a more disciplined and technical way of losing weight, the Tanita BC558 is the way to go. It can be purchased at the Competitive Edge website for about $299.99.
